Security and encryption
Understand FavLock’s encryption key, what is protected, and how to unlock your private library safely on another device.
What FavLock encrypts
Protected values are encrypted in your browser before they are stored or synced.
Bookmarks
Saved bookmark titles and URLs are stored as ciphertext.
Documents and tasks
Document and task titles and content are encrypted before storage.
Readspace
Saved article titles, snapshots, source URLs, citation details, selected quotes, matching anchors, and annotations are encrypted before storage.
Organization
Collection, tag, and List names are also protected.
On-device reading
Your encryption key is required to turn protected ciphertext back into readable data.
Separate secrets
Your sign-in password authenticates the account. The encryption key decrypts the protected fields.
Look after your encryption key
- Keep access to the passkey that protects your encryption key.
- If you use a recovery-key file, keep it in a secure backup location.
- Never share the key or a transfer QR. Anyone with it can unlock your encrypted bookmarks.
- Remember the key only in browser profiles you control.
- Do not rely on your FavLock password as a backup for the key; they serve different purposes.
Unlock another device
- 1
Sign in on the new device
Use the same FavLock account. The unlock dialog appears because the browser does not have your encryption key. - 2
Unlock with your passkey
Choose Unlock with passkey and verify with your fingerprint, face, or device PIN. Your passkey manager must make the same passkey available on this device. - 3
Use recovery when needed
You can also upload the recovery-key file, enter the key manually, or scan a transfer QR shown on an already unlocked device. - 4
Choose whether to remember it
On a personal browser, Remember this device saves the key locally for future visits.
