FAQ
What to know before you start.
The essentials about privacy, recovery, browser support, and plans.
What does FavLock do?
Save bookmarks in one private library, organize them with collections and tags, and find them with search on your device. Open a bookmark to return to the original website; a bookmark alone is not an offline copy of the page.
What does Free include?
Free includes up to 1,000 bookmarks, local search with field, item type, tag, collection, and favorites filters, sync, and 7-day Trash recovery. It also includes 50 documents and tasks combined, 25 saved articles, and 3 Lists. No credit card is required. Pro adds unlimited bookmarks, larger content limits, full-content search for documents, tasks, and articles, and Saved Smart Views.
What happens if Pro ends above the Free bookmark limit?
You have 30 days to keep using and editing the library, export it, and delete bookmarks; adding, importing, and restoring bookmarks is paused. After that, FavLock enters recovery mode with export, deletion, billing, account settings, support, and upgrade available. If the account is still Free and above 1,000 bookmarks at day 180, only the newest excess bookmarks are permanently removed and the oldest 1,000 are preserved. Deleting down to 1,000 or restoring Pro cancels the restriction and cleanup.
Can a very large library affect performance?
Yes. FavLock decrypts protected library content locally on your unlocked device for browsing and search, rather than on our servers. Very large libraries require more local processing, memory, and browser storage, so loading, syncing, and searching may become slower depending on your device and browser. Unlimited bookmarks means Pro has no numeric bookmark allowance; it does not guarantee the same performance at every library size or on every device.
What do I need to set up?
Create an account with Google or email and complete any required email confirmation. Then protect your library with a supported passkey or save your recovery key. Keep a recovery copy somewhere safe. You can then save a link or choose to import bookmarks. Import and extension installation are optional; signup does not import anything.
What is private, and what can the service see?
Protected library content, including bookmark titles and URLs, is encrypted in your browser before storage and sync. Your unlocked browser decrypts it and searches locally. Account details and operational metadata are processed separately to run the service. This does not hide your activity from a website you reopen.
How do I recover access to my library?
Use a configured passkey, your recovery key, or a key transfer from an already unlocked device. Passkey availability depends on your browser and passkey provider. If you lose every recovery option, FavLock cannot reset your encryption key or decrypt your protected content. Resetting your account password does not recover that key.
Can I export my bookmarks or back up my library?
Yes, from an unlocked library. Export bookmarks as readable browser HTML, or create an encrypted .favlock archive of selected library content using your existing recovery key. The downloadable offline decryptor opens that archive locally with the key. HTML exports are not encrypted; keep them and your recovery material safe.
Do I need an extension, and which browser is supported?
The web dashboard works without an extension. FavLock has extensions for Chrome and Firefox. Connect your account and unlock your library before saving supported pages; browser restrictions and plan limits apply. Capturing new articles for Readspace requires either extension. Dashboard imports from Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari do not require an extension: use bookmark HTML, or a Safari ZIP export.
Is FavLock open source?
The dashboard and the Chrome and Firefox extension source are public under the MIT license. The hosted backend is private, so the public repository is not a complete self-hosted FavLock service.
