Before you move anything
Most browser imports add bookmarks instead of replacing what is already there. That protects the destination library, but it can also create duplicates or place everything inside an Imported folder.
- Do not delete or reorganize the source library before exporting it.
- Export from the browser profile that actually contains the bookmarks you want.
- If the destination already has bookmarks, export those too before importing.
- Keep the transfer file in a private location until verification is complete.
Export bookmarks from Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari
These paths were checked against the browser providers’ instructions in September 2026. Menu names can change in later releases.
| Source browser | Export steps | File to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | Open More (⋮) → Bookmarks and lists → Bookmark Manager, then open More (⋮) and select Export bookmarks. | Bookmark HTML |
| Edge | Open Favorites, select More options (⋯), then select Export favorites. | Bookmark HTML |
| Firefox | Open Menu (☰) → Bookmarks → Manage bookmarks, then select Import and Backup → Export Bookmarks to HTML. | Bookmark HTML |
| Safari | On a Mac, select File → Export Browsing Data to File, select Bookmarks, then choose Export (or Download on macOS Sequoia and earlier). On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Apps → Safari → Export, select Bookmarks, then save the ZIP file. | Safari ZIP |
On current Safari versions, choose only the data you intend to move. The Safari ZIP format can contain separate files for bookmarks, passwords, payment cards, history, and extensions. A bookmark-only transfer does not require moving those other categories.
Firefox also offers a browser-specific JSON backup. That format is useful for restoring Firefox, but bookmark HTML is the more portable choice when the destination is another browser or bookmark manager.
Import the file into the destination browser
Keep the original export unchanged. If the import fails, make a fresh export instead of editing the HTML or ZIP by hand.
| Destination | Import path | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | More → Bookmarks and lists → Import bookmarks and settings → Choose file | Select the bookmark HTML file. If Chrome already has bookmarks, the import may appear in Other bookmarks. |
| Edge | Settings and more → Settings → Profiles → Import browser data → under Other import locations, select Import next to Import browser data now | Select Favorites or bookmarks HTML file, choose the exported file, and open it. |
| Firefox | Menu → Bookmarks → Manage bookmarks → Import and Backup → Import Bookmarks from HTML | The file is added to the existing library, usually under the Bookmarks Menu, so duplicates are possible. |
| Safari on Mac | File → Import From Browser → Google Chrome or Firefox; for an exported file, choose File → Import Browsing Data from File or Folder → Choose File or Folder | Safari can import directly from an installed Chrome or Firefox browser, or from a compatible exported file. |
Verify the structure before cleaning up
Do not trust the success message alone. Check the folders and links most likely to expose a partial import.
- 1
Check top-level and nested folders
Confirm that the main folders exist, then open several folders two or more levels deep. If nothing appears on the bookmark bar, look under Imported, Other bookmarks, or Bookmarks Menu.
- 2
Search for known links
Choose five to ten distinctive bookmarks from different parts of the source library. Search for them and open a few URLs.
- 3
Review duplicates
Imports are often additive. Decide which copy to keep only after checking titles, folder locations, and any browser-specific metadata you care about.
- 4
Keep the backup for a while
Use the new library for a while before deleting the source or its export. You may notice a missing item days later.
Bring an existing browser library into FavLock
FavLock’s dashboard can import bookmark HTML from Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, plus supported Safari ZIP exports. A file import does not require installing a browser extension.
- 1
Open Data transfer
In the FavLock dashboard, open Data transfer, choose Import bookmarks, and select the HTML or Safari ZIP export.
- 2
Review the preview
FavLock checks valid links, folder paths, duplicates, and the current account allowance before writing the import.
- 3
Resolve duplicates deliberately
Repeated records in the source can be skipped. Existing library duplicates are shown for review so you can choose how to handle them.
- 4
Verify Collections and subcollections
FavLock preserves up to two Collection levels. Deeper source paths are folded into the subcollection name—for example, Work › Project—so verify those names after import.
The exact dashboard controls and export choices are documented in FavLock data transfer. If your next task is simplifying the imported structure, continue with the large-library organization guide.
Common bookmark transfer problems
| Problem | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The import looks empty | The bookmarks were placed under Other bookmarks, Bookmarks Menu, or an Imported folder. | Search for a known title, then inspect those destination folders. |
| Many duplicates appeared | The destination already contained some of the same URLs, and the import was additive. | Review duplicates before deleting; keep the copy with the organization you want. |
| Folders moved but tags did not | HTML is a portable bookmark format, but browser-specific tags and metadata do not always map. | Keep the source and rebuild only the tags that still help retrieval. |
| Safari produced a ZIP, not HTML | Current Safari browser-data export wraps separate data files in a ZIP. | Use a destination that accepts the Safari ZIP, or follow its documented HTML import path. |
| Safari Reading List looks missing | Safari’s current export places Reading List inside Bookmarks.html as a subfolder. | Search for a known Reading List item, then inspect the imported Reading List folder. |
| Edge Collections are missing | Edge 145 stopped accepting new Collection items, and Collections became unavailable in Edge 149. | If an older Edge profile still shows the retirement notice, choose Move to Favorites; only saved web pages move, not images or notes. Personal accounts can also check Bing Saves, while work or school accounts may offer Export Your Data. |
